“We live in a chronically exhausted, overstimulated world. Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of complete relaxation, holistically addressing our physiological, neurological and subconscious needs.
Yoga Nidra uniquely unwinds the nervous system, which is the foundation of the body’s wellbeing.” ~ Rod Stryker.
During Yoga Nidra, we investigate our actual experience so that we can understand the nature of who we actually are and what the world really is.
Through Yoga Nidra, one can discover a profound process that teaches us how to carefully and systematically investigate the nature of our beliefs that define our personal identity and differentiate the world around us into separate objects. For instance, we believe that we are solid and separate and that there is an external world that exists independently of us. But we may never have deeply examined the actual reality of these beliefs.
Yoga Nidra helps us investigate and dispel the roots of our conditioning that underlie our misperceptions of reality.
Yoga Nidra dissolves the obstacles that stand in the way of our leading an authentic life of purpose and meaning, and, for those who are interested, it can awaken us into living an enlightened life of self-realization as our True Nature.
At its minimum, Yoga Nidra will lead you to experience profound relaxation, the release of chronic stress, restful sleep, resolution to many of life’s conundrums, and a greater sense of harmony in your daily life and relationships.
In its ultimate revelation, Yoga Nidra points directly to your True Nature, to peace that is beyond description and is your birthright. This peace is not an empty promise, or only for a selected few, but is present and available to you right now. I take great comfort in sharing this delicious practice with you.
Keep in mind that Yoga Nidra is not a philosophy. It is a series of exercises you engage in to discover the living truth about yourself and the world.
Sheaths and Stages of Yoga Nidra
Stage 1: Physical Body – Awareness of sensation
Stage 2: Energy Body – Awareness of breath and energy
Stage 3: Emotional Body – Awareness of feelings and emotions
Stage 4: Body of intellect – Awareness of thoughts, beliefs and images
Stage 5: Body of Joy – Awareness of desire, pleasure and joy
Stage 6: Body of Ego-I – Awareness of the witness or ego-I
Stage 7: Natural State – Awareness of changeless Being.
During one session of Yoga Nidra, I will work with a particular sheath, several sheaths, or all the sheaths in succession. These sheaths are only conceptual tools used to organize Yoga Nidra in order to practice in a consistent manner.
The Law of Awareness
Each stage in Yoga Nidra addresses a particular sheath. As you move through the stages, stress, conflict and constriction melt away, disclosing authentic insight and right action, and uncaused happiness, contentment, and peace that exist independent of all changing states of body, mind and senses.
THE LAW OF AWARENESS is the power inherent in Yoga Nidra and is based on the Law of Awareness. Whatever you are willing to be with, you go beyond. Whatever is allowed to merely be, as it is, in awareness, resolves, dissolves and disappears. This truth pertains to your every experience. Some people find Yoga Nidra similar to Mindfulness-Based Stillness Meditation practice. Yet, Yoga Nidra is more profound than any Mindfulness Meditation practice. However, it may be that I will guide a simple mindfulness meditation practice as an introduction to Yoga Nidra. This usually depends on how much Yoga Nidra and/or Meditation practice class participants have had previously.
